Subject: Ontario Building Codes - Energy Efficiency - Urgent Action Required

Get out your virtual pens

Dear All,
CAN-RAC has been pushing for improved building codes for years and we have a real opportunity to push the Ontario gov't to do something significant. Unfortunately, there is a fierce lobbing campaign by the building industry against good standards.

Ontario is updating its building codes including the energy efficiency sections. Unfortunately, the best of the four options presented by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing is a timid return to 1992 regulations that were chopped by the Conservatives in 1997 plus low E Argon windows.

Ontario groups have written to the Minister asking that the code require at least an Energuide 80 rating. This is in line with what Natural Resources Canada and the Ontario's Chief Conservation Officer have recommended.

Ontario groups need the support of CAN-RAC members across the country to get this through. If we succeed, we will be able to use the Ontario standards as a lever to push other provinces. So, as I have asked you to do so often before get out your "virtual pens" and write to the Minister in support of the attached letter.
